Shares and tokens: how rights differ
Tracking a company’s share price does not necessarily make you its shareholder.
Editorial review: 12 October 2026First identify the instrument
The term tokenized share can describe different structures. Ask whether the token represents the registered share or an instrument issued by a third party that tracks its value. Using a blockchain does not by itself answer that distinction.
The xStocks example
Kraken explains that xStocks provides exposure to the underlying value without shareholder rights such as voting. Its documentation describes how the economic benefit of dividends is reflected. That mechanism should not be confused with receiving dividends directly as a shareholder.
Four questions for comparison
Who issues the instrument? What can you legally claim? How are dividends and corporate actions handled? How can you sell or redeem? Look for answers in the prospectus and product terms. Extended trading hours also do not ensure sufficient buyers at your expected price.
