Tokenized Treasuries and stablecoins: the differences

Distinguish a payment instrument from an investment product, check eligibility and understand redemption.

Editorial review: 2026-10-19

Two tokens, different questions

Two tokens referring to dollars do not necessarily represent the same right. Start by asking what you hold: a unit intended to track a currency, an interest in a fund or a debt instrument. Then identify the entity against which you can exercise that right. A brand name, network or application interface cannot answer these questions. This guide offers a document-reading method, not an investment selection.

USDC and OUSG as examples

Circle describes USDC as digital currency redeemable one for one into US dollars. Ondo describes OUSG as exposure to short-term US government debt and money market funds for Qualified Purchasers. These serve different functions. Using USDC to subscribe to another product does not turn that product into USDC: its instrument, conditions and risks need separate examination.

Backing is not your contract

When a page mentions Treasuries, identify their place in the structure: issuer reserves, fund investments or collateral for a note? Do not assume that you own bonds in your name or receive income earned on reserves. Find the document defining your rights. Check how the exit value is calculated, which expenses are deducted and which entity makes the payment. Record missing information instead of filling gaps with assumptions.

Eligibility comes before the wallet

A blockchain address does not establish that its owner can subscribe. Check residence, client classification, identity verification and wallet approval. OUSG requires qualified access. USDC redemption procedures also depend on the relevant regime and entity; Circle publishes a specific European Economic Area policy. Do not apply one platform’s conditions to another. A visible trading page is not evidence that your particular circumstances satisfy the provider’s rules.

Transfer is not bank settlement

Separate four actions: sending a token, selling it to someone else, requesting redemption and receiving the final money. Identify the responsible entity and limits at each step. Ondo documents instant-operation limits and a non-instant process. An interface operating at the weekend does not prove that any amount can arrive immediately in a bank account. The relevant question is which exit route actually applies.

A practical comparison exercise

Illustrative example: two profiles mention government debt, but one serves payments and the other represents an investment. Write five answers for each: acquired right, responsible entity, access requirements, valuation method and available exit. Add the date and source document for every answer. Mark missing evidence as unverified. This compares actual conditions instead of choosing by a product name, advertised speed or promotional percentage. Recheck the documentation when conditions change.

Educational content. Not an investment recommendation.

Stablecoin, governance or receipt

USDS, SKY and sUSDS share an ecosystem but serve different roles: stable reference, protocol decisions and a savings position. Likewise USDe, ENA and sUSDe. Not every stablecoin has an associated governance token; a company name does not establish one.
