Tokenized gold: checking backing, custody and exit routes
A practical checklist for gold-token profiles, separating token sales from physical delivery.
Editorial review: 2026-10-19Start with rights, not a gold-bar picture
Tokenized gold connects a digital record with rights described by a provider. Before comparing names, read the terms and identify the responsible entity, the holder’s rights and the custodian’s role. A golden logo or the word gold does not explain the structure. This guide organizes questions and documents; it does not recommend a token or rank products by safety. Keep the contractual description beside the marketing summary when you review a profile.
Provider statements and supporting evidence
Paxos describes each PAXG as backed by one fine troy ounce of gold. Its page links to an allocation lookup tool and periodic reports. These illustrate documents to look for, not proof that a similarly named token has equivalent backing. Always check the official domain, product name and contract on the network in use. A copied ticker does not establish that the instrument comes from the stated provider.
Reserves, custody and balances are different checks
Record how much metal the provider states it holds, who stores it and which document connects the token to that metal. Check the scope and date of the available report; a reserve review does not answer every legal or technical question. If a platform holds your token, ask whether the account represents withdrawable tokens or internal exposure. An on-screen balance alone does not describe your rights against that platform. Record uncertainties explicitly.
Describe the exit before comparing
Distinguish selling a token to another person, redeeming for money and requesting physical metal. For each route, find minimum amounts, costs, identification requirements, eligible countries and timings. Illustrative example: holding a small digital fraction does not establish that you can receive an equally small bar. If documents do not explain delivery or transport, mark those details as unverified rather than assuming they are included. Each route needs its own evidence.
Residence affects access
Check issuer and intermediary restrictions separately. When consulted on 19 October 2026, the official PAXG page stated that the product was unavailable in the European Union. Inclusion in an informational directory should not be treated as an offer to Spanish residents. A compatible wallet or accessible website does not replace eligibility checks and current terms. Avoid assuming that another holder’s country or account arrangement applies to you.
A reusable review sheet
Create one row per product covering entity, rights, metal unit, custodian, reserve document, network and contract, costs, access and exit. Save links and the reading date. Separate confirmed information, issuer statements and unanswered questions. Also consider what happens if gold falls, a platform suspends withdrawals or wallet access is lost. These are distinct problems: physical backing alone does not resolve them all. Revisit the sheet when the provider changes its documentation.
